Ethiopia was elected to chair AFRA for one year
AFRA -- (African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training related to Nuclear Science and Technology) is an agreement established in 1990 so that African countries can use nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes, and it currently includes 44 member countries. After organizing the 35th AFRA-Technical Working Group Meeting (TWGM) in Addis Ababa in June 2016, Ethiopia was elected to chair AFRA for one year from 19 September 2024. This happened on the sidelines of the 68th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Annual Conference, which is being attended by the Ethiopian delegation under the leadership of the Honorable Dr. Belete Molla from 16-19 September 2024. Honorable Dr. Belete Molla, the minister of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, was chosen by the member countries to lead AFRA for one year on behalf of Ethiopia. The handover took place in the presence of the Director General of the IAEA, Raphael Mariano Grossi. Furthermore, the honorable director general confirmed that the agency will strongly support AFRA. The Minister also stated that in the next one year, they will work hard to use the growing and expanding science and technology in Africa for peaceful purposes, such as health, agriculture, mining, environmental protection, energy sources, industry and other sectors. This responsibility will be useful if it is possible to widely implement the multifaceted importance of nuclear science and technology.
