H.E Minister Dr. Belete Molla Getahun visited the Nuclear Research and Reactor Center in Beijing, China.
The Minister visited China's Nuclear Power Authority and during the visit, he discussed with the chief executive of the authority, Liu Jing, the issue of cooperation between the two countries to use nuclear power for peaceful purposes, especially in human resource development.
In the discussion, the Honorable Minister mentioned China's all-round development support in Ethiopia, and especially expressed that Ethiopia would like to reach the level of development that China has achieved in the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
The minister thanked China for the support it has been giving to train Ethiopian experts in the field of nuclear technology, he said that the support started with the development of human resources should continue and practical activities have been started to develop the technology in Ethiopia.
It was also discussed on the possibility of expanding the context in which universities in Ethiopia work in cooperation with Chinese universities and institutions in the field of nuclear education and research.
The minister added that Ethiopia is working closely with the International Nuclear Energy Agency (IAEA) and asked the authority to support Ethiopia's request to the agency to build an African training center with the agency.
Liu Jing, CEO of the China Nuclear Power Authority, said that he supports Ethiopia's efforts to develop nuclear technology, starting with the development of human resources.
CEO Liu Jing said that a tripartite agreement will be made between the African Union, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Chinese government to establish a training facility in Africa at a meeting in Focac in September.
According to this agreement, the international organization and China will provide support to the African Union and Ethiopia, and despite the existence of this multilateral agreement, it has been agreed that there should be a bilateral agreement between Ethiopia and China on the issues they want to work on together.
At the same time, Minister of Innovation and Technology, H.E. Dr. Belete Molla Getahun and his team visited the Nuclear Research and Reactor Center in Beijing.
In particular, the processes, strategies, and actual results that have led China to develop small research reactors to its present stage are described. The Ethiopian Embassy in Beijing participated in the discussion.
