Ethiopia participated in the 68th Annual Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency
The Ethiopian delegation participated effectively in the 68th United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Annual Conference and related side programs, which was held from September 16-20, 2024 in Vienna, Austria. The minister who headed the Ethiopian delegation, Dr. Belete Molla, referred to the core works done in technical cooperation with the agency in the past, and asked Ethiopia to benefit from the major technical cooperation that the agency will carry out in the future. The minister mentioned to the assembly the work being done by the government of Ethiopia and also stated the need for further support, and expressed that his country will continue to make efforts to ensure more benefits in the areas of health, taxation, manufacturing and energy development by enhancing the development of peaceful nuclear science and technology, and called on the agency to support this effort. Following the Rays of Hope initiative that the agency announced earlier, which focuses on the health sector, it has been stated that it will continue to strengthen its assistance to member countries by organizing and supporting cancer treatment centers in health institutions. The 68th Assembly also announced a new initiative called Atoms4Food that focuses on agricultural productivity. It is said that this initiative will help the regions and countries of the world that have the challenge of ensuring food security to increase their research and production efforts in the agricultural sector by using nuclear science and technology. Minister Dr. Belete mentioned the significant efforts that Ethiopia is making in the agricultural sector to increase productivity and emphasized that it should be the primary beneficiary of the initiatives announced by the agency. In connection with this, Minister Dr. Belete Molla, who is the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mr. He held a bilateral meeting with Rafael Mariano Grossi. In their discussions, Honorable Mariano Grossi said that they will continue to support Ethiopia's efforts to increase agricultural productivity under the Atoms4Food program announced at the conference to increase the capacity of cancer treatment centers in Ethiopia and to expand more centers, to strengthen the center of the mosquito control project, and to help universities that offer nuclear engineering programs. They confirmed it in their conversation.
